What am I Doing?

"If you do what you've always done, you will get what you've always gotten."

This quote, by either Anthony Robbins or Zig Zigler from what I can tell by some brief and wholly inadequate internet research, is what I'm pondering today. It makes so much sense, it is so clear. I read it and say to myself, of course, how would I get anything different if I'm always doing the same things?

Why then, do we so often stay with doing what we've always done? What keeps us there, when we dream of getting something different out of our lives? I think it's fear.... of failure, of losing something we already have, of being uncomfortable, of the unknown. If we change, try something new, put ourselves out there, what we get might be... worse. Better to stay with what we have.

But what if we get something better? What about the successes, the new wonderful things, that might be waiting for us if we change? So easy to forget about that, to brush it under the rug of fears we keep ourselves stranded on. Don't leave this comfortable, warm little rug for the big, bad cold floor of life.

Am I doing what I can, to get something different out of my life? That is the question I'm asking myself today, trying to move off of my little rug.  How about you?

  1. Wonderful thought to ponder... but I agree I think it is fear that keeps us with the familiar. Doing something new... that is taking a risk, delving into the unknown causes fear, uncertainty and doubt. Why do you think there is a little voice that reminds us "Better the devil you, than the devil you don't"?

Great thought provoking post... thanks for sharing!

  2. change is not natural unless we want it to be. somethimes, we have to see the value of making it happen. Good words, my friend.

  3. I love the beautiful colours in that photograph. I know exactly what you're saying about getting out of our comfort zone - it's what I'm trying to do at the moment. It's scary and exciting at the same time.

  4. It's taken me a long time, but I've become braver in my middle years. Now I realize that change IS inevitable, and we can step out, take risks, and learn new ways of seeing or doing, OR watch the world go by and get left behind.

I get so frustrated with the folks in the USA who scream about wanting to move things back to what they were...don't they realize that the world is always changing and we can't go back? (Sorry, just got election results this morning)

Thanks again for sharing the Kat Eye View. I love the bike photo -- is that Portland?

  5. I love the photo :) As for change and fear, yes, that annoying fear getting in the way even when we know when the time is right for a change, it's so hard to undo years and years of the kind of thinking that we've been brought up to believe, but we must keep trying and must keep pushing ourselves. I'm right in the middle of pushing through one of my fears, I simply stopped caring if I'm going to fail and am pressing ahead with something I've been wanting to do for a long time now, I'll keep you posted on the progress! :)

  6. My friend, I have been in a Grand Canyon sized rut for months now. And that quote, whoever first wrote it because really who has the patience to wade through pages of Google results, is perfection.

I'm hovering on the edge of climbing out - thanks for the push.

  7. I highly recommend the Mondo Beyondo e-course - you're already on such a great path, but the class is so uplifting and encouraging, both in the way it's written and in the community that does the class along with you. You should check it out!
